“So
in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums
up the Law and the Prophets.” Mathew 7:12
Christian Love is rooted first in
loving God and secondly, in loving our neighbors as ourselves.
Let me quickly say this, the best way
to love yourself is to love God. This is because you can trust God with your
life. He will keep you, protect you, see you through your challenges, help you
and guide you. God can never mismanage your life.
The best way to love your neighbor is
to do to them exactly what you expect them to do to you. Many Christians have
failed in this regard, that is why we see the trouble that is in the world
showing its face in the church today. The characteristics of Christian love is
revealed in 2 Corinthians 13. Verses 4-7 says, “Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor
others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of
wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always
protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” Before you do
anything to your neighbor who can be a believer or an unbeliever, put yourself
in his or her shoes. If it was you, how would you take it? Secondly, if your
neighbor is in need and you have the power to meet it, Love compels you not to
neglect him or her. Love is expressed by giving (John 3:16). Finally, the best
way to show God to others as a Christian is by showing true unconditional love.
1 John 4:12 says, “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God
lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”
May the true Love be found in you,
with you and around you in Jesus name.
Prayer
for today: Oh God, give me the grace to be an agent of your true love
wherever I find myself in Jesus name.
